The Journey of Guts – Berserk (Guts Genderbend)

This is my tribute to the journey of one of my all time favorite characters, Guts (Berserk).

I’m a fan of drawing male characters as female, so I decided to keep drawing Guts as a woman (After my first attempt at a gender-bent artwork, being “Gutsette”). If I drew Guts as he is, I might not have had such a fun time drawing this artwork.

From left to right, it shows different stages of Guts’s life so far.

The tree, where Guts’s journey started,
Childhood,
Pre-band-of-the-hawk years,
Golden age arc
Black swordsman (swordswoman?)

And finally, Guts’s arrival to Elfhelm.

The background of each stage is meant to reflect what was going on in Guts’s life at that time period. Tried to add subtle details and nods so that fans of Berserk will be reminded of certain events in the story.

Unfortunately, I don’t have much experience, nor many references to draw from to create an appropriate background for the last stage. I made due with adding bright colors, silhouettes of elves (fairies), and some surreal flora.

I took some liberties with the character design (apart from gender), for aesthetic reasons. The most striking feature is the hairstyle. Instead of limiting myself to a generic short hairstyle, I decided to add various different styles for each time period. While mostly for aesthetics, the last two have Guts’s bad eye hidden. It’s meant to be as some kind of natural eye-patch, while it’s still fashionable. It doesn’t hinder Guts’s eyesight, as he can’t see from that eye to begin with.

I added a braid to the opposite side to keep the hair from getting in his good eye, but I added numerous free strands, again, for aesthetic purposes. Armor and clothing have not changed much, save for fitting Guts’s more feminine figure. Didn’t want to change too much.

I hope you like this piece!

Thank you.
